The classic story that has got around is that American Jennings Cox invented the cocktail when running low on Gin. This reputable occurred in 1896, in the town of Daiquiri near Santiago.
Mr Cox named it and made it famous outside of Cuba. But if we are talking about getting this drink into the hands of Americans, then Cox deserves all the acclaim. He was also responsible for the drink ending up in the hands of American Admiral Lucius Johnson who took the recipe to the Army and Navy club in Washington in 1909.
In 1896, Wilhelm Röntgen announced his discovery of x-rays.
