The Hanky Panky was created by Ada Coleman, or Coley, as the regulars knew her.
This cocktail was created for the actor Charles Hawtrey a few years before 1925. We don’t known exactly when, but we do know that in a 1925 interview with The People she related that it was ‘some years ago’. Charles allegedly came in and loved to try new drinks, and would often ask Coley to create new mixes for him. On the memorable evening that the Hanky Panky was first created, he sipped it and exclaimed that it was ‘the real hanky-panky!’
