Both trader Vic and Don Beach claim that they are the author of this cocktail, and neither of them would tell anyone their recipes until Tiki was well and truly dead in the 1970s.

Larger Tiki chains, like Trader Vic, were not above poaching staff from other Tiki bars in the hope that they would bring with them the signature recipes. Don Beach used to re-bottle all his ingredients in plain bottles that were labelled with numbers and letters, and the recipes would call for various amounts of these secret ingredients.
