Though this recipe appears in Charles H Baker’s book under a different name ‘Smugglers Eye Opener Cocktail’ our recipe is adapted from the 1935 ‘Cafe Royal’ book. Upon speculation this libation is likely a favorite of prohibition era smugglers bringing Dutch Gin or Jenever from Europe to America at a time when it’s popularity was at six times the number of any other style of gin.
